Ukraine observed the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster on Sunday, amid concerns that the ongoing conflict with Russia could trigger a repeat of the catastrophic nuclear accident that caused numerous casualties and severe environmental damage. The commemoration of the disaster, which spread radioactive materials across Europe while Soviet authorities downplayed its magnitude, has taken on added significance during the current Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials have accused Moscow of launching missiles and drones near the Chornobyl plant to target Ukrainian cities, resulting in damage to critical protective structures. Additionally, Russian forces have taken control of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, leading to recurrent power outages since March 2022.
Foreign dignitaries, including the EU energy commissioner, visited Kyiv on Sunday to honor the anniversary and offer renewed assistance to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which has been repeatedly attacked by Russian airstrikes. Solemn ceremonies were held in Kyiv and at the Chornobyl plant, where President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials paid their respects.
The Chornobyl plant’s protective structure, damaged by a Russian drone strike in February 2025, requires substantial repairs to avert permanent harm. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development estimates that repairs costing at least 500 million euros are needed to safeguard the site. The International Atomic Energy Agency emphasized the urgency of initiating repairs without delay.
With nuclear power playing a crucial role in Ukraine’s energy supply post-invasion, the Zaporizhzhia facility’s control remains a contentious issue in peace talks brokered by the U.S. between Kyiv and Moscow. The 1986 Chornobyl disaster had far-reaching consequences, displacing hundreds of thousands of people and contaminating vast areas with radiation. The long-term health effects and total death toll from the disaster continue to be debated.
Pope Leo highlighted the enduring impact of the Chornobyl tragedy on global consciousness and urged the responsible use of atomic energy to promote life and peace. The solemn ceremony in Kyiv also served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those involved in the cleanup efforts at the Chornobyl plant, including Serhii Balashov, who spoke of the authorities’ attempts to conceal the health consequences of the disaster.
The eerie silence now surrounds the Chornobyl plant, located in a restricted zone north of Kyiv, where National Guards patrol the premises and a limited number of workers oversee its decommissioning. The once bustling city of Prypiat lies abandoned nearby, reclaimed by nature as wildlife roams freely in the absence of human presence.
