Tennis Canada named Vicky Mboko, the National Bank Open champion, as the women’s player of the year, while Felix Auger-Aliassime received the men’s accolade. Mboko, hailing from Burlington, Ont., achieved an impressive 62-14 record in various competitions this year, rising from No. 350 to No. 18 in the world rankings. She secured her first WTA Tour title as a wild-card entry in Montreal, defeating top players like Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina, ultimately upsetting former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka in the final. Additionally, the 19-year-old Canadian clinched the women’s singles player of the year and women’s most improved player of the year titles after claiming victory in Hong Kong last month.
On the other hand, Auger-Aliassime, 25, captured three ATP Tour titles and attained a career-high ranking of No. 5 globally. Tennis Canada’s CEO Gavin Ziv praised the exceptional season of Canadian tennis, marking it as one to be remembered fondly. Auger-Aliassime, representing Montreal, emerged victorious in ATP 250 events in Brussels, Montpellier, and Adelaide, reaching the semi-finals at the ATP Finals and becoming the first Canadian with multiple 50-win seasons (50-24).
Other notable awards included Gabriela Dabrowski from Ottawa winning the women’s doubles player of the year award, and Cleeve Harper from Calgary receiving the men’s doubles player of the year honor. Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo was recognized as the most improved men’s player, and Thomas Venos from New Westminster, B.C., was honored as the wheelchair player of the year.
