“Surge in Canadian Youth Trying Nicotine Pouches”

A recent study indicates a significant surge in the usage of nicotine pouches among Canadian youth, with over one-third reporting experimentation with these products. The research, conducted by the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit, revealed that in 2022, 7.6% of participants had tried nicotine pouches, a figure that escalated to 34.8% by 2026. The study, which has been monitoring 3,400 individuals aged 17 to 27 since 2020, astonished researchers with the rapid increase in pouch utilization.

Notably, the study observed a marked rise in the regular use of nicotine pouches among young people. While only 1% of respondents claimed to have used pouches in the previous month in 2022, this number surged to 8.5% this year. Despite being marketed as a smoking cessation aid, these tobacco-free pouches are attracting non-smokers, echoing concerns raised by health organizations and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO has cautioned against the aggressive marketing of nicotine pouches to youth globally, prompting several countries, including Canada, to impose restrictions on their sale. Despite these measures, conservative politicians and the tobacco industry in Canada are advocating for relaxed regulations on nicotine pouches. The sole approved brand in Canada, Zonnic, manufactured by Imperial Tobacco, has been at the center of the debate.

The current restrictions on nicotine pouches have garnered opposition from various quarters, including the federal Conservatives and industry representatives, who argue that the limitations hinder consumer choice and could fuel illicit sales. Health experts stress the importance of maintaining these regulations to curb youth access and prevent a further increase in nicotine consumption.

The study findings also indicate a gender disparity in nicotine pouch use, with a larger proportion of male users. The ease of use, discreet nature, and heavy promotion of these products on social media platforms and by influencers are believed to contribute to their growing popularity among young adults. Despite the push for relaxation of regulations, the debate around nicotine pouches in Canada remains contentious, with implications for public health and tobacco control efforts.
