Los Angeles County’s grand jury has formally charged Nick Reiner with murder in the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, adding the accusation that he ambushed them in a premeditated attack. The grand jury issued the indictment on July 20, which was made public on Wednesday when 32-year-old Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty.
Rob Reiner, a well-known director and actor, and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were fatally stabbed in their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on December 14. Nick Reiner was apprehended shortly after the incident and formally charged two days later.
This grand jury indictment marks a significant progression towards a trial, bypassing the need for a preliminary hearing in California, where evidence is publicly presented. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the case as a severe betrayal by someone the victims trusted and loved deeply.
The unsealed indictment does not provide significant new details but highlights the lying in wait aspect, making Reiner eligible for the death penalty, although prosecutors have not yet decided whether to pursue it. The document mentions the use of a knife in the killings, aligning with reports that the couple was indeed stabbed.

Nick Reiner is currently in a legal battle to access funds from a trust established by his parents, aimed at supporting his defense. Despite the trustees denying him access without legal grounds, Nick Reiner emphasizes that the trust was designated for him, regardless of his parents’ status. The trust is reported to hold assets of at least $1.5 million US, although the exact amount remains undisclosed.
In an effort to strengthen his defense, Nick Reiner is seeking to rehire prominent defense lawyer Alan Jackson, after his siblings withdrew financial support and a public defender took over. A hearing on this matter is scheduled for the upcoming week.
The L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, representing Reiner, refrained from commenting on the indictment. The prosecution in California can opt for a grand jury process, as in this case, or proceed through a public preliminary hearing.
