Canadian Consumer Refuses All American Products Amid Rising Tariffs

Ever since the United States imposed tariffs on Canada in early 2025, Francine Piché has been adamant about avoiding American products.

Living in Burlington, Ontario, Piché has enforced a household rule prioritizing Canadian products, followed by non-U.S. options, and avoiding American goods whenever possible.

To uphold this principle, Piché has transitioned to Canadian personal care brands, terminated her Amazon membership, and scrapped plans for a New York trip to refrain from supporting the U.S. economically, except when no other choices are available.

However, with the recent implementation of new 50 percent U.S. tariffs following failed trade discussions, Piché has decided to cease all exceptions to her buying habits.

Her family is now planning to cancel their remaining American streaming service subscriptions upon renewal, and Piché is prepared to forgo some of her beloved gluten-free American-made foods, even if alternatives are scarce.

“My determination is unwavering,” affirmed Piché. “That’s my way of resisting.”

Following the initial shift away from American products over a year ago, recent trade tensions have reignited the Buy Canadian movement, prompting consumers to further embrace Canadian goods.
