“Black Gay Man Finds Belonging Back Home”

After relocating to Ottawa in 2023 to pursue his long-delayed bachelor’s degree in communications at Saint Paul University, Jumol Royes found himself grappling with unexpected challenges and feelings of isolation in the unfamiliar city. Royes, a single gay Black man, had hoped that the move would bring about a fresh start and a sense of self-reinvention in a new environment.

Despite his initial enthusiasm, Royes soon encountered difficulties integrating into Ottawa’s 2SLGBTQ+ community. Unlike his experiences in Toronto’s vibrant 2SLGBTQ+ scene, where he felt connected and welcomed, Royes felt invisible and excluded in Ottawa’s social spaces. The predominantly white queer community in Ottawa seemed tightly knit, making it challenging for outsiders like Royes to establish meaningful connections.

As time passed, Royes struggled with increasing feelings of isolation and the weight of personal setbacks. His mental health suffered, leading him to withdraw from his studies. The passing of his godmother back in the Greater Toronto Area further exacerbated his emotional turmoil. Royes found solace in returning home to his family in Vaughan, where he eventually decided to stay permanently.

Back in Vaughan, Royes embraced a new role as a caregiver for his aging parents, finding fulfillment in spending quality time with them and reconnecting with his roots. While adjusting to this new chapter, Royes reflected on the importance of community and the realization that true independence is not about solitude but about building meaningful connections and support systems.

Through his journey of self-discovery and rediscovery, Royes learned to prioritize emotional well-being and the value of community over the pursuit of individual success. As he navigates this transition period, Royes continues to seek balance between personal growth and the comfort of familial bonds, recognizing that true independence is intertwined with a sense of belonging and connection.
