A tragic incident unfolded on Friday evening as a two-year-old child lost their life after being found in the Ottawa River. Ottawa police responded to reports of a missing child near the Kichi Zībī Mīkan parkway around 7 p.m. Upon arrival, the child was not immediately located, prompting a search operation involving marine dive team members, tactical officers, and assistance from the Gatineau Police Service.
Approximately 40 minutes later, the child was spotted in the river by the Ottawa police’s air support unit and was retrieved from the water. Despite resuscitation efforts by first responders, the child was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. In a statement, Ottawa police expressed condolences to the child’s family, loved ones, witnesses, and everyone impacted by the heartbreaking incident.
Inspector Brian Samuel highlighted that the child, accompanied by a family member, was swept away by the fast current of the Ottawa River. He emphasized the high water levels and dangerous currents, cautioning that appearances can be deceiving as the water may seem calm on the surface. The authorities are treating the incident as an accident, a standard procedure in cases involving the death of a young child, with the homicide unit and the sexual assault and child abuse unit conducting investigations.
As of the latest update, Inspector Samuel indicated that initial findings suggest the toddler’s death was a tragic accident, underscoring the risks posed by swift currents during this time of year.
