Russia launched a series of ballistic missiles and drones in a concentrated attack overnight, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals and injuries to 30 civilians in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. This assault came after a previous Russian offensive that caused casualties and damage across Ukraine, taking advantage of Kyiv’s lack of Western anti-ballistic missile defenses.
The ongoing onslaught hinders the prospects of a diplomatic resolution to Russia’s prolonged invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s Defence Ministry announced a “massive strike” targeting military-industrial facilities and logistics centers in Kyiv.
The strikes caused significant damage, with a five-storey residential building in the Solomianskyi district being hit, resulting in a fire and the evacuation of 35 residents. Tragically, two people lost their lives and eight others, including two children, were injured. In the Darnytskyi district, seven fatalities and 14 injuries were reported due to fires and structural damage.
Additional incidents included a fire in a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district and reports of people trapped in residential buildings in other areas of the city. Damage to both commercial and residential structures occurred in two more districts of Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for Patriot anti-ballistic missile defense systems to counter Russian missile attacks. The diversion of interceptor missile supplies earmarked for Ukraine to the U.S. and its Gulf allies was highlighted, along with recent discussions on providing Ukraine with the capability to produce Patriot systems.
Russian advances have slowed this year, with fighting spanning over 1,200 kilometers of the front line. Ukraine has also retaliated by targeting Russian oil facilities, logistics sites, and weapons production. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the conflict.
In a significant development, Ukrainian drones sank a civilian vessel belonging to the Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom in the Black Sea. The incident was described as an act of piracy and maritime robbery by the company’s head, with all 17 crew members surviving the attack.
The intensification of attacks on ships supporting the opposing side’s war efforts has been observed in recent weeks by both Russia and Ukraine. The ongoing conflict continues to escalate, with devastating consequences for civilians and infrastructure in the region.
