The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has made a decision to stop airing advertisements for Kars4Kids, a well-known charity campaign known for its catchy jingle encouraging viewers to “donate your car today.” This move comes after a California court ruling that deemed the campaign deceptive.
CBC spokesperson Chuck Thompson confirmed the decision, stating that in light of concerns about the charity, the broadcaster has opted to pull their ads. The ruling by Judge Gassia Apkarian of the Superior Court of California required that any future Kars4Kids ads in the state must explicitly disclose the charity’s affiliation and how donations are utilized.
The lawsuit leading to the ruling was filed by Bruce Puterbaugh, who had donated a vehicle to the charity under the impression that it supported underprivileged children across the U.S. However, it was later revealed that the primary beneficiary of Kars4Kids is a Jewish organization called Oorah based in New Jersey.
Judge Apkarian highlighted Oorah’s programs, including adult matchmaking and gap year trips to Israel, which contrast with the impression created by the Kars4Kids ads featuring child actors and the repetitive jingle. She described the advertising as misleading to consumers.
In Canada, Oorah is recognized as a registered charity by the federal revenue agency, with financial records indicating substantial transfers to the U.S. and Israel for various projects. Despite inquiries, Kars4Kids did not clarify if funds raised in Canada benefit local children.
Kars4Kids’ operations in Canada are based in a shared office space in downtown Toronto, with no physical staff present during a recent visit. The charity stated that it aids numerous children through various programs, including summer camps, youth groups, and educational assistance.
Kars4Kids asserts that its Canadian branch operates independently and is not involved in the California court case. The organization maintains that its fundraising efforts support a range of children’s initiatives and educational grants, emphasizing its commitment to youth development and safety.
