Manny Malhotra, the current coach of Abbotsford Canucks, is a potential candidate to replace Foote. Johnson plans to discuss the future with Malhotra, acknowledging his track record in developing young players and achieving success with a young team.
Johnson and Malhotra have a history of working together, notably leading Abbotsford Canucks to victory in the Calder Cup championship last season. Interestingly, Malhotra’s son, Caleb, is a highly regarded prospect in the upcoming NHL entry draft, where the Canucks hold the third overall pick. Johnson emphasized that decisions will not be influenced by personal relationships, ensuring fairness in the selection process.
Assistant general managers Cammi Granato and Émilie Castonguay will retain their positions under the new coaching structure. Foote’s tenure as head coach lasted one season, marked by the team’s struggles, injuries, and the departure of captain Quinn Hughes. In contrast, Malhotra brings extensive NHL experience, having played 16 seasons, including a stint in Vancouver, and transitioning into coaching roles within the Canucks organization.
