British Columbia’s leader has declared that Tumbler Ridge Secondary School will be demolished and reconstructed at a different site following the tragic mass shooting in February. David Eby, the province’s premier, disclosed this decision during a press conference at the legislature, emphasizing the government’s commitment to swiftly erecting the new school.
After the devastating incident that resulted in the loss of eight lives, including students and a school staff member, the community’s resolve for a fresh start was evident. Eby commended the local school district for collaborating with residents to chart the path forward, ensuring that the survivors and affected families are at the forefront of the decision-making process.
Approximately 160 students from Grades 7 to 12, who have been attending classes in temporary facilities at the local elementary school, will benefit from the upcoming construction of larger modular classrooms in Tumbler Ridge. These new classrooms, expected to be operational before fall 2026, will offer improved learning environments to accommodate up to 30 students each.
Nicole Noksana, chair of the Tumbler Ridge Parent Advisory Council, expressed satisfaction with the announcement, echoing the sentiments of many families who preferred not to return to the former school site. She envisioned the new school incorporating specialized areas for mental health support and modern facilities for practical learning, such as woodworking and science labs.
Chad Anderson, the chair of School District 59, lauded the government’s backing for the reconstruction project, highlighting the importance of facilitating healing and progress for the community members who have endured significant trauma. While the timeline and costs for the new school are yet to be determined, Eby confirmed federal funding support for the initiative, underscoring the widespread goodwill towards Tumbler Ridge’s recovery.
The fate of the old school site remains uncertain, with discussions ongoing regarding potential memorialization or repurposing of the land. Mayor Darryl Krakowka acknowledged the diverse viewpoints within the community and emphasized the importance of engaging with all stakeholders in shaping the site’s future.
