A Vermont farmer was surprised by the birth of six lambs from her sheep, Teemu, who is named after the famous Finnish hockey player Teemu Selänne. The event took place at Clover and Bee Farm in Underhill, Vt. Owner Anne O’Connor, who was anticipating twins, was astonished by the unexpected arrival of sextuplets. This occurrence is extremely rare, with some agricultural sources stating the odds as one in a million or even higher.
Teemu’s delivery caught O’Connor off guard, especially because it happened earlier than expected. She recalled hearing the distinct sounds of sheep in labor and rushed to assist Teemu. The birthing process required O’Connor’s intervention to ensure the lambs could breathe properly by clearing mucus from their mouths.
Despite the challenges, Teemu successfully gave birth to all six lambs, each with its unique personality. O’Connor noticed that the sixth lamb was notably calm compared to its siblings. In honor of their mother’s Finnish heritage, the lambs were named after the numbers one through six in Finnish.
An expert, Dinesh Dadarwal, an associate professor at the University of Saskatchewan, shared insights on the rarity of sheep sextuplets. He mentioned a similar case he encountered, attributing such occurrences to genetic mutations that lead to multiple ovulations in ewes.
In the midst of personal struggles, O’Connor found solace in the arrival of the lambs, considering it a symbol of hope and life on the farm. She closely monitored the lambs’ progress, especially providing extra care for one of the newborns, named Kaksi, through bottle feedings every few hours in the initial week.
Despite facing a recent breast cancer diagnosis, O’Connor found joy and optimism in the birth of the sextuplets, emphasizing the resilience and beauty of life on the farm.
