UPDATE, June 12 — Vancouver authorities have officially stated that the individual involved in a reported vehicle collision in Vancouver’s West End on May 15 is now charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.
Tadd Bali is also accused of two counts of reckless operation of a motor vehicle resulting in bodily harm following the passing of a senior who was hit on that day.
A 75-year-old man, riding a motorized scooter, succumbed to his injuries after being struck in what Vancouver police describe as a “vehicle collision” earlier this month. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. PT on May 15 in Vancouver’s West End, leaving the victim severely injured.
The man, identified as Johnny Sudds by his family, tragically passed away on May 24 as confirmed by the police. In a statement, Sudds’s family expressed profound grief over his untimely demise due to what they described as a “bizarre violent act.”
The family acknowledged the outpouring of support from friends and neighbors who left notes and flowers at a makeshift memorial at the intersection of Comox and Bute streets, where Sudds was struck. They mentioned that the shrine provided solace during Sudds’s hospitalization and continues to serve as a source of comfort.
Authorities had responded to reports of erratic driving near Comox and Broughton streets, with witnesses reporting the vehicle striking various objects and causing distress in the area. Const. Darren Wong, a spokesperson for the Vancouver Police Department, highlighted the unusual and disruptive nature of the incident in the typically peaceful West End neighborhood.
The suspect was apprehended after colliding with a police vehicle and overturning his own. Investigators are looking into mental health and substance abuse as potential contributing factors to the event.
