“Two Order of Canada Recipients Dismissed for Serious Misconduct”

Gov. Gen. Mary Simon has given approval for the dismissal of two former recipients of the Order of Canada. One individual was involved in a child sexual assault case, while the other was implicated in collusion and corruption. Peter Dalglish, recognized in 2016 for his humanitarian efforts through Street Kids International, was found guilty of sexually assaulting two boys aged 11 and 14 in Nepal, leading to a 16-year prison sentence. Jacques Lamarre, a former CEO of SNC-Lavalin, had his Order of Canada membership revoked after being found guilty by a disciplinary council of engaging in corrupt activities, including payments to Saadi Gadhafi. The termination notices were published in the Canada Gazette, signed by the governor general back in April. These actions were recommended by the advisory council for the Order of Canada. Removal from the Order of Canada is uncommon, with past cases involving figures such as Conrad Black, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Garth Drabinsky. The revocation of this honor is considered a significant step reserved for instances where the individual’s actions are not in line with societal standards, such as criminal convictions or professional sanctions.
