A recent report highlights the perilous situation faced by numerous freshwater fish species, with the dorado catfish exemplifying the challenges of their migratory journeys. This colossal fish, native to the Amazon, embarks on a remarkable voyage from the Amazon estuary in northern Brazil to the Andes Mountains spanning Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil, covering a staggering distance of up to 11,000 kilometers.
However, these migratory fish populations, including the dorado catfish, are under threat due to habitat destruction, overfishing, and the impediments posed by dams obstructing their migration routes. Zeb Hogan, a biologist from the University of Nevada, emphasized the critical importance of safeguarding these migrations to prevent stock depletion and potential extinction of these species.
A comprehensive global assessment conducted by Hogan, in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund, the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, and the University of Nevada, revealed that 325 migratory fish species crossing international borders urgently require concerted efforts for their conservation and survival.
The decline of these fish populations is attributed to various factors such as dam obstructions hindering migration paths and disrupting spawning cycles, habitat degradation, and unsustainable practices like overfishing and agricultural encroachment on floodplains. The report also highlights the plight of the American eel, underscoring concerns raised by Steven Cooke, a Canadian fisheries biologist, regarding the species’ vulnerability despite not being listed as endangered by the federal government.
