“Struggling with Superpowers: Supergirl Film Falls Short in Storytelling”

The challenge of creating compelling narratives around supremely powerful characters like Supergirl is a common dilemma, often resulting in contrived scenarios to introduce conflict and vulnerability. This overused trope of burdening omnipotent beings with artificial challenges to evoke relatability has been a recurring theme in superhero storytelling, including in the recent portrayal of Supergirl.

In an attempt to tackle this issue, the early-2000s webcomic “minus” humorously critiqued the clichéd notion that a normal human life is inherently more desirable despite the extraordinary abilities of superpowered individuals. Rather than dwelling on the hardships of being faster than a speeding bullet, “minus” subverted expectations by highlighting the inherent thrill and wonder of possessing superhuman capabilities.

Supergirl, portrayed by Milly Alcock, grapples with her own struggles in the film, isolating herself from humanity and her own powers as a coping mechanism. Her journey takes a turn when she reluctantly takes on the protection of Ruthye, a mortal seeking vengeance with a valuable sword in hand. As they embark on an interstellar quest, Supergirl learns the value of companionship and connection, ultimately finding solace in abandoning her self-imposed solitude.

While the film boasts impressive world-building and performances, particularly from Alcock and Eve Ridley as Ruthye, it falls short in its execution. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the storytelling lacks depth and coherence, resulting in a narrative that feels disjointed and uninspired. Despite attempts to inject moral dilemmas and conflicts, the film struggles to engage viewers beyond surface-level action sequences and character dynamics.

In its exploration of themes like exile, identity, and empowerment, “Supergirl” misses opportunities to delve deeper into the complexities of its characters and their motivations. The film leans on conventional superhero tropes without offering fresh perspectives or meaningful insights, ultimately leaving audiences with a sense of disappointment and disconnection from the narrative.
