“South African Activist Fights Anti-Migrant Violence”

South African activist, Sharon Ekambaram, is actively involved in assisting migrants who are facing threats and violence from anti-migrant groups in the country. The protests led by groups like March and March and Operation Dudula have resulted in the deaths of five individuals and forced both documented and undocumented migrants out of their homes, with businesses and properties being vandalized.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has rejected the protesters’ demand for undocumented immigrants to leave, emphasizing the importance of non-violence and discouraging vandalism. Ekambaram criticizes the government for blaming migrants for issues like unemployment and inequality instead of addressing the root causes.

Ekambaram highlighted the assistance provided by organizations like the South African Council of Churches, offering essentials like food and legal support to those in need. She emphasized the importance of unity in standing against the minority promoting division and hatred in the country.

The recent rise in anti-migrant sentiment is attributed to political parties scapegoating migrants for social problems to divert attention from corruption and mismanagement issues. Ekambaram stressed the need for government accountability in addressing inequality and creating opportunities for all citizens, rather than blaming migrants for societal challenges.

She called for a focus on tackling inequality, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated unemployment rates in South Africa. Ekambaram criticized the spread of misinformation on social media platforms, emphasizing that migrants have historically contributed to the country’s development and should not be scapegoated for systemic issues.

The activist urged the government to prioritize addressing inequality and job creation rather than targeting migrants, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to build a more inclusive society.
