Benjamin Steinberg, a Los Angeles filmmaker, eagerly anticipates the reopening of Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome, where he looks forward to enjoying movies once more under its iconic geometric roof. The closure of the renowned cinema in 2021 left Steinberg and other cinema enthusiasts without this cherished experience. However, following persistent efforts by Steinberg and advocates, Sony Pictures Entertainment has revealed plans to refurbish the Dome and recommence operations in early 2028, coinciding with a potential revival in movie theater attendance.
Originally established in 1963, the Cinerama Dome is recognized for its distinctive geodesic dome design, vibrant block-letter signage, expansive curved screen, and capability to showcase 70-mm films. Designated a Historic-Cultural Monument by the city in 1998, the Dome holds a special place in the hearts of many. Its closure in April 2021, exacerbated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the popularity of streaming services, deeply affected residents of Los Angeles.
Sony’s announcement states that Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, part of its theater chain, will manage the Cinerama Dome along with the adjacent 14-theater complex. The company pledges to maintain the theater’s unique retro-futuristic architecture, reminiscent of structures like Toronto’s Ontario Place Cinesphere and Montreal’s Expo ’67. Tom Rothman, CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, emphasized the goal of honoring the Dome’s storied past while ensuring its continued vibrancy for years to come.
This development coincides with a resurgence in box office revenues and a cinematic renaissance driven in part by Christopher Nolan’s film, “The Odyssey.” Alison Whitney, a film and media studies professor at Texas Tech University, noted that this trend reflects a desire for a more tangible connection to media, emphasizing the allure of authenticity. The recent uptick in movie ticket sales is primarily fueled by younger audiences seeking a departure from the digital, algorithm-driven media environment they grew up with.
Throughout his tireless campaign to save the Dome, Steinberg orchestrated rallies, collaborated with Hollywood directors, amassed a petition with over 30,000 signatures, and maintained a social media presence with nearly 12,000 followers. Despite facing discouragement from others, Steinberg persisted in his efforts. The news of the Dome’s preservation led to outreach from Sony and expressions of support from industry figures and film enthusiasts worldwide, underscoring the significance of this achievement to cinema lovers globally.
