Sidney Crosby to Lead Canada at World Championship

Sidney Crosby is set to represent Canada at the upcoming world championship in Switzerland, as confirmed by his NHL team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Hockey Canada. This will mark Crosby’s fourth appearance at the event and his 11th time representing his country on the global stage. The 38-year-old, hailing from Cole Harbour, N.S., led Canada to a silver medal at the Milano-Cortina Olympics but missed the medal round due to a knee injury sustained in the quarterfinals.

Despite the Pittsburgh Penguins’ early exit from this year’s playoffs at the hands of the Philadelphia Flyers, Crosby had a productive season, notching 29 goals and 74 points in 68 games. The three-time Stanley Cup champion also topped his team in various categories, including power-play goals and game-winning goals. Crosby’s stellar performance this season propelled him to seventh place on the NHL’s all-time scoring list, with 1,761 points, and marked his 16th time leading his team in scoring.

Hockey Canada recently announced that San Jose Sharks’ Macklin Celebrini will serve as the team’s captain, with John Tavares from the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ryan O’Reilly from the Nashville Predators as alternates. Canada’s first match is scheduled for Friday against Sweden in Fribourg.
