In a tragic incident in the southern Philippines, three students lost their lives in a school shooting, with the suspected 16-year-old gunman taking his own life, according to provincial officials. The shooting, which occurred in Banga town in South Cotabato, left eight others injured, with four in critical condition. All the victims were students aged between 14 and 17.
Mayor Albert Palencia shared details of the shooting, mentioning that the suspect had warned his friends about his plan after lunch. Despite initially thinking it was a joke due to the shooter’s known sense of humor, the suspect proceeded to carry out the attack, injuring 10 students before turning the gun on himself.
Describing the events further, Palencia explained that the suspected gunman fired indiscriminately at students in a neighboring classroom after leaving his Grade 9 class. The weapon used in the attack was a 9-mm pistol belonging to the suspect’s father, who was an employee of the Department of Education. The firearm had been accessed from a vault where it was stored before being brought to the school.
Following the tragic incident, South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo emphasized the importance of responsible firearm ownership, especially in ensuring that guns are inaccessible to minors. Tamayo highlighted the need for collective efforts in safeguarding schools, considering the challenges posed by monitoring a large student population.
This school shooting adds to a series of similar incidents in the Philippines, which were previously uncommon. Recent events include a livestreamed shooting in Zamboanga and an attack in Tacloban, both resulting in casualties. Despite strict gun ownership regulations in the country, illegal firearms continue to circulate, indicating ongoing challenges in preventing such tragic events.
