“Rep. Swalwell Resigns Amid Assault Allegations”

U.S. Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell from California declared his resignation from Congress on Monday due to multiple sexual assault accusations, leading to bipartisan demands for his departure. This marks a swift downfall for the lawmaker, who was once considered a top contender in California’s gubernatorial race before withdrawing on Sunday following the emergence of the allegations, which he continues to deny.

Expressing regret for his past errors in judgment, Swalwell acknowledged the false accusation against him while taking responsibility for his past mistakes. Following the sexual assault claims made by a woman who worked for him, Democrats swiftly distanced themselves from Swalwell. The allegations were first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle and later by CNN, detailing two instances of assault, one in 2019 and another in 2024, where the woman claimed she was too intoxicated to consent to sexual activity.

Although the woman’s identity remains undisclosed, the House ethics committee commenced an investigation into the allegations on Monday. Swalwell, in a video response on Friday, refuted the claims but alluded to infidelity in various statements. Additionally, other women, including Democratic strategist Ally Sammarco, accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct, citing incidents like sending a nude photo.

Swalwell, elected to the U.S. House in 2012 after serving as a city council member in Dublin, California, gained national attention by launching a presidential bid in 2019. Despite his brief presidential campaign and subsequent involvement in Trump’s impeachment proceedings, Swalwell faced scrutiny for his association with a suspected Chinese intelligence operative, leading to an FBI inquiry.

His sudden withdrawal from the California gubernatorial race left a void among the crowded field of candidates vying to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom. With the race featuring multiple Democratic and Republican contenders, Swalwell’s departure reshuffled the dynamics as his former supporters sought new affiliations. The primary election on June 2 will determine the top two candidates advancing to the November election, with Republicans eyeing an opportunity to reclaim the governor’s office after 15 years.

As calls for his resignation intensified, Swalwell responded by announcing his decision to step down from Congress to avoid distractions from his duties. This move raised questions about potential expulsion votes against other members, including Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas, who recently disclosed an affair with a former staff member who tragically passed away. Amid the evolving political landscape in the U.S. House, Republicans hold a slim majority, with upcoming special elections to fill vacant seats.

The unfolding events surrounding Swalwell’s resignation and the broader implications for the political landscape highlight the ongoing shifts and challenges within the realm of American politics.
