Demonstrations are sweeping across Ontario in opposition to Premier Doug Ford and several recent controversial actions by the provincial government, such as modifications to freedom of information (FOI) laws and OSAP grants. Despite the rainy conditions, hundreds of individuals congregated at Queen’s Park, brandishing signs and umbrellas, and voicing slogans like “Doug Ford always lies, bring back FOI” and “no jets at Billy Bishop.”
Participant Doug Oliver expressed discontent with the premier’s decisions, labeling them as “anti-democratic” and suspecting hidden motives behind Ford’s amendment to the FOI Act. A dedicated website titled “Protesting Doug Ford” lists 55 protests scheduled in various municipalities, urging residents to contact their local MPP to trigger a no-confidence vote for Ford’s resignation.
The recent protests echo previous demonstrations held across the province, with the Ford government’s contentious omnibus budget bill receiving royal assent. This bill enforces changes like capping ticket resale prices, introducing a one-year HST rebate, and implementing a retroactive FOI law shielding the premier and his cabinet from public document access.
In Waterloo, protesters challenged Ford’s healthcare policies, emphasizing the need to support the existing healthcare system and allocate sufficient funding. Concerns were raised by residents in Ottawa as well, with organizer Amanda Brown expressing frustration with Ford’s decisions and advocating for change.
At the Toronto rally, emotions ran high as attendees criticized Ford’s lack of transparency regarding FOI laws and the controversial sale of a $28.9 million private jet back to Bombardier. The protesters highlighted their concerns about accountability and honesty in governmental actions.
The Ministry of Finance defended the government’s measures as essential for Ontario’s progress, emphasizing the mandate received from Ontarians during the previous election. The province asserts that the budget consultations engaged citizens effectively, leading to strategic investments in various sectors to address pressing financial challenges.
