Residents of Old Ottawa South are rejoicing over the installation of new signage that narrates the history of an ancient boulder discovered in their neighborhood during the COVID-19 pandemic. During a recent unveiling event at Windsor Park, Bellwood Avenue resident Gauri Sreenivasan expressed the significance of the sign in providing public education and engagement regarding the colossal erratic, fondly known as the “Bellwood Boulder,” which was deposited by glaciers around 10,000 years ago and remained hidden beneath Bellwood Avenue until it was unearthed in April 2021 while water pipe replacements were underway.
Sreenivasan shared that amidst the pandemic lockdown, she and fellow residents turned to the massive rock, which had been exposed on the road for weeks, as a gathering spot. It became a focal point for discussions and interactions, symbolizing a sense of community during challenging times. Despite initial plans to crush the boulder for easier removal, residents, including Sreenivasan, advocated for its preservation not only to safeguard a piece of natural history but also to strengthen neighborhood ties.
With the support of local residents and city officials, the boulder was carefully relocated to Windsor Park, much to the delight of community members like Lindsay Suthren, who had lived on Bellwood Avenue for years and was thrilled by the unexpected discovery. Sreenivasan emphasized the empowering message behind the preservation of the boulder, highlighting the unity and influence of community action in saving a piece of heritage for future generations.
