The leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committee expressed concern on Saturday about the deteriorating health of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, who is currently imprisoned in Iran. Mohammadi was moved to a hospital due to a severe decline in her health, which included episodes of unconsciousness and a cardiac crisis.
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation stated that her transfer to the hospital was necessary as her condition could not be adequately managed by prison doctors. Mohammadi, a women’s rights advocate and anti-death penalty campaigner, won the Nobel Peace Prize while in prison. She recently experienced a suspected heart attack.
According to the foundation, Mohammadi is currently in an unstable condition and requires oxygen. They are calling for her to be transferred to a hospital in Tehran for specialized treatment and tests. The Norwegian Nobel Committee urged Iranian authorities to release Mohammadi to her medical team to receive urgent care, emphasizing that her life is at risk.
Mohammadi was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison earlier this year and the Nobel committee had previously called for her immediate release. She was arrested in December for speaking out against the death of a lawyer, Khosrow Alikordi. Her family has demanded the dropping of all charges related to her human rights activism.
