“Nicola Sturgeon’s Ex-Husband Admits Embezzling £400K”

Former Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon’s estranged husband, Peter Murrell, has admitted guilt to embezzling over 400,000 pounds from the Scottish National Party during his tenure as chief executive. Murrell, 61, confessed in court that he misappropriated the funds to support a luxurious lifestyle, purchasing items such as a motorhome, two cars, and high-end goods.

The revelation of Murrell’s actions has shocked the party, with SNP Leader John Swinney expressing deep dismay at the betrayal of trust. The confession marks the culmination of a lengthy police investigation spanning five years and a tumultuous period for the SNP and the former power couple.

Following significant electoral gains for the SNP in the Scottish Parliament in 2021, internal strife surfaced within the party less than two years later, triggered by concerns over finances and declining membership. Sturgeon, a prominent figure in Scottish politics for nearly a decade, unexpectedly resigned as first minister of Scotland’s semi-autonomous government in February 2023, citing a personal conviction that it was the right time to step down.

Shortly after Sturgeon’s resignation, Murrell resigned from his role as party executive, taking responsibility for providing misleading information to the media regarding the party’s declining membership. Subsequently, Murrell was arrested at the couple’s Glasgow residence by the police, who conducted searches at their home, the SNP headquarters in Edinburgh, and seized a luxury motorhome belonging to Murrell’s mother.

Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston described the investigation as intricate and costly, revealing that Murrell had meticulously concealed his embezzlement activities over a span of 12 years by manipulating financial records. Houston emphasized Murrell’s abuse of trust and misuse of party funds to sustain an extravagant lifestyle.

Murrell’s sentencing is set for June 23, casting a shadow over Sturgeon’s legacy. The investigation into the SNP’s handling of funds allocated for a Scottish independence campaign had previously led to Sturgeon and former party treasurer Colin Beattie being questioned by the police. However, in March 2025, both Sturgeon and Beattie were cleared of any wrongdoing.

While Sturgeon’s leadership steered the SNP to prominence in Scottish politics and reshaped the party into a dominant force with progressive social stances, her departure from office amid internal divisions left her primary objective of Scottish independence unachieved. Sturgeon announced her divorce from Murrell in the previous year after a marriage of approximately 15 years.

Sturgeon expressed shock and disappointment at Murrell’s actions, stating on social media that she was appalled, hurt, and saddened by the impact on their family, friends, and the party. Questions have been raised about Sturgeon’s knowledge of Murrell’s activities, with Scottish Labour deputy leader Jackie Baillie urging further clarification from Swinney regarding the party’s awareness of the embezzlement.
