NHL Star Dennis Hull Dies at 81

Dennis Hull, a versatile NHL player who excelled alongside his superstar older brother Bobby Hull while playing for the Chicago team and contributed to Canada’s victory in the 1972 Summit Series, passed away on Friday night at the age of 81, as confirmed by his brother Garry. The news of Hull’s death was also shared on social media by his nephew Bart Hull, followed by a statement from team owner Danny Wirtz. Hull spent most of his 14-season NHL career with Chicago, followed by a final year with the Detroit Red Wings. He participated in five all-star games and was honored as a second-team NHL all-star in the 1972-73 season.

Described as a player with exceptional skill, toughness, and intelligence, Dennis Hull was not only a dominant force on the ice but also known for his amiable personality off the rink. According to Wirtz, his sharp wit, humor, warmth, and humility endeared him to everyone he encountered, making him a beloved figure in the league. Despite his brother Bobby’s absence from the 1972 Summit Series due to his involvement with the World Hockey Association, Dennis showcased his abilities by scoring two goals and providing two assists in four games while playing alongside Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert of the New York Rangers.

Throughout his NHL career, Hull amassed 303 goals and 351 assists, totaling 654 points in 959 regular-season games. Additionally, he contributed 67 points in 104 playoff games, although his team, Chicago, fell short of winning the Stanley Cup during his time with them. Bobby Hull, the legendary “Golden Jet” and a Hall of Famer, passed away in January 2023 at the age of 84. The Hull brothers, who hailed from a large family of 11 siblings in the rural town of Point Anne, Ontario, left a lasting legacy in the hockey world.
