A Conservative Member of Parliament from New Brunswick is taking legal action to reject an $8,800 annual salary increase granted by the House of Commons. Miramichi-Grand Lake MP, Mike Dawson, filed an affidavit in Fredericton seeking judicial review of a decision made by the Board of Internal Economy on April 20, 2026. The Board, an all-party committee overseeing administrative matters for the House, had determined it lacked the authority to accommodate Dawson’s request.
Dawson expressed his motivation for challenging the salary increase outside the courthouse, emphasizing his commitment to doing what he believes is right for Canadians. The base salary for MPs was $208,900 last year, escalating to $217,700 on April 1, as confirmed by House Speaker Francis Scarpaleggia’s spokesperson, Olivier Duhaime. The increase is tied to a formula based on private-sector salary trends.
The MP argued that amidst economic challenges faced by many Canadians, it is inappropriate to accept a raise. Dawson stated his intention to decline the increase back in February, prompting mixed reactions within the Conservative caucus. Despite suggestions to donate the extra earnings, Dawson insisted on his right to refuse the raise, highlighting the importance of individual MPs having the autonomy to make such decisions.
