Sam O’Reilly, Jared Woolley, and Jussi Ahokas played pivotal roles in leading the Kitchener Rangers to their third Memorial Cup victory, securing a 6-2 win over the Everett Silvertips in Kelowna, B.C. Ahokas, the first European head coach to win the Memorial Cup, expressed his pride in achieving this milestone alongside Finland’s triumph in the world men’s hockey championship.
O’Reilly’s exceptional performance in the final, where he garnered four points with three assists, earned him the MVP title. He joined a select group of players, including NHL stars Brad Richards, Corey Perry, and Mitch Marner, as one of the rare individuals to be named the most valuable player in the regular season, playoffs, and tournament. Woolley also shined, contributing significantly to the team’s success as a physical shutdown defender.
Kitchener’s victory was further highlighted by standout plays from players like Jack Pridham, who scored important goals throughout the tournament. With a dominant performance, the Rangers solidified their position as the top team in the Canadian Hockey League, showcasing their strength by sweeping Barrie in the OHL and securing a spot in the final through impressive round-robin play.
The Silvertips, led by head coach Steve Hamilton, put up a strong fight but ultimately fell short against the Rangers’ skilled lineup. Christian Kirsch’s excellent goaltending, coupled with goals from key players like Luke Ellinas and Dylan Edwards, propelled Kitchener to a decisive victory. Despite a valiant effort from the Silvertips, highlighted by Landon DuPont’s standout performances, the Rangers emerged as deserving champions.
In response to the win, Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic commended the team and the community for their unwavering support. A celebration is planned in honor of the Rangers’ victory, bringing the Memorial Cup back to Kitchener after nearly two decades. The city is set to host a parade to commemorate the team’s remarkable achievement and the excitement it has brought to the community.
