This week, he appeared in a promotional video for his girlfriend, popstar Katy Perry’s latest single “Watch It Burn,” sparking discussions online about his image – whether he appears cool, cringeworthy, or disgraceful.
In the 15-second TikTok video, the 54-year-old is one of several individuals seen jumping on screen while Perry performs in the foreground. Perry shared the video on Thursday, following similar clips released in various locations since the end of June.
Some viewers were pleased to see Trudeau enjoying himself, smiling, and dressed casually.
TMZ showcased the video on X Friday, describing Trudeau’s “dancing debut” as “sweet.”
However, less favorable accounts used the opportunity to criticize the former PM. Podcast host Mario Nawfal quipped, “From running a G7 country to B-roll,” while author and ex-Concordia University professor Gad Saad stated that Trudeau’s time in power was “a forever stain on Canada.”
Others pointed out that critics, particularly “MAGA,” were overreacting to the video. American columnist Matthew Yglesias commented that Trudeau, accompanied by his pop star girlfriend, is living his best life, asserting, “You may not approve, but this is peak performance.”
Engagements at Coachella, Red Carpets, and Canada Day
In recent months, Trudeau has been seen enjoying various public outings with his new partner, deviating from the typical post-office pursuits of former prime ministers like consultancy work or speaking engagements.
The couple was first publicly spotted together in 2025 during a dinner date in Montreal.
In April, they attended the Coachella music festival in California, where Trudeau was photographed in a casual setting, and in May, they made their red carpet debut at the Tribeca Festival in New York City.
Last month, Trudeau and Perry were seen at the U.S.-Paraguay match at the FIFA Men’s World Cup, where Perry performed before the game.
During his recent visit to Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa, Trudeau mentioned that he was doing well post-prime ministership, expressing relief at being able to relax and enjoy the occasion without the constraints of his former position. He also showed gratitude towards his political staff and wished them a day of relaxation.
Trudeau and his ex-wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, parted ways in 2023 after an 18-year relationship. Perry announced her separation from longtime fiancé Orlando Bloom in 2025.
