Despite Paramount’s assurance to maintain both studios as separate entities and release a combined 30 movies annually, critics fear significant job losses and a concentration of power in the film industry. In response to these concerns, Paramount defended the merger, claiming it would provide more opportunities for creators and a broader platform for their work.
The letter, organized by a coalition of advocacy groups including the Committee for the First Amendment, expressed worries about the merger prioritizing the interests of a few stakeholders over the industry’s integrity, independence, and diversity. Notable signatories of the letter included Ben Stiller, Don Cheadle, Javier Bardem, Lily Gladstone, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tiffany Haddish, and Ted Danson. Damon Lindelof, known for his work on “Watchmen” and “Lost,” shared his apprehensions about the merger leading to fewer jobs and a decline in creative output in Hollywood.
