Eva Marie Saint, a slender and fair actress who achieved fame by winning an Academy Award for her debut film, “On the Waterfront,” and starring alongside Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “North by Northwest,” has passed away at the age of 102. The news was confirmed by family representative Jeff Sanderson, stating that Saint died at her residence in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Saint’s illustrious acting career extended well into her 90s. She made a striking entry into Hollywood as the romantic interest of Marlon Brando’s character in “On the Waterfront.” During her first appearance at the Academy Awards, while pregnant with her first child, she humorously expressed the possibility of going into labor while receiving her Oscar from Frank Sinatra. The birth of her son Darrell followed two days later. Her refusal of studio contracts and decision to focus on her family after the success of “On the Waterfront” showcased her strong independence.
Despite becoming an instant star with her award-winning performance, Saint deliberately limited her film appearances in the early years, including turning down roles in high-profile productions such as “The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit,” “Summer and Smoke,” and “The Rainmaker.” Her husband, Jeffrey Hayden, encouraged her to star in Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest,” a move that proved pivotal in her career.
Transitioning to television in the 1970s, Saint enjoyed a resurgence in the 1980s with roles in popular works like the sitcom “Moonlighting” and the comedy film “Nothing in Common.” She received an Emmy for her performance in the 1990 miniseries “People Like Us” and continued to appear in films in the 21st century, including “Because of Winn-Dixie,” “Superman Returns,” and “Winter’s Tale.”
Saint’s enduring marriage to Hayden lasted 65 years until his passing in 2016. Born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, Saint initially aspired to become a teacher but found her passion for acting while in college. Following her breakthrough audition with Elia Kazan, she joined the Actors Studio, where she honed her skills and overcame her initial shyness.
Throughout her career, Saint captivated audiences with her talent and grace, leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.
