Family of Slain Engineer Seeks Answers

The family of Pablo Osorio Sánchez is urging Mexican federal authorities to connect the murder of the 26-year-old engineer with the investigation into the January abduction of 10 Canadian mining company workers. Osorio Sánchez was taken captive in the same locality and timeframe as armed individuals seized employees and contractors of Vizsla Silver Corp. His remains were interred in the same hidden graves where nine of the 10 kidnapped workers were discovered by federal officials.

The family believes that insights from the Vizsla Silver abductions could shed light on the circumstances surrounding Osorio Sánchez’s tragic fate. Jaime López, Osorio Sánchez’s uncle, expressed their quest for clarity on the identity and motivations of the perpetrators, emphasizing the multitude of unanswered questions they face.

On the morning of January 23, between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., armed assailants, reportedly affiliated with a Sinaloa cartel faction, raided a secured compound in Concordia, Sinaloa, known as La Clementina, where Vizsla Silver personnel resided and parked company vehicles. Concurrently, Osorio Sánchez left his residence in Concordia to head to a bus stop for his daily commute to a highway tunnel worksite, located several kilometers away.

As he conversed with his girlfriend over the phone while waiting for transportation, the call abruptly ended after she heard male voices mentioning, “We can fix this.” This marked the final communication with Osorio Sánchez before his disappearance, as detailed by family accounts and official reports from relevant bodies.

Approximately two weeks after his disappearance, federal authorities unearthed Osorio Sánchez’s body, originally from Taxiaco, Oaxaca, buried alongside other unidentified bodies in an unmarked grave in El Verde, a village situated about 19 km northwest of Concordia. The investigative records retrieved by CBC News revealed that his body was assigned the designation “Indicio C” within the discovery site labeled as “fosa 2.”

Autopsies disclosed that Osorio Sánchez succumbed to a gunshot wound to the right side of his head, coupled with severe blunt-force trauma. Furthermore, a suspected bullet injury was detected on his right jaw, lacking an exit point. The devastating loss has left López and the family shattered emotionally, particularly considering Osorio Sánchez’s role as the eldest sibling among three brothers.

The El Verde burial grounds held the remains of nine of the 10 individuals abducted from the Vizsla Silver compound, showing similar signs of physical trauma and fatal gunshot injuries. Notably, the fate of the tenth worker, Francisco Antonio Esparza Yáñez, responsible for community relations, remains unknown. Legal counsel Maurillo Santiago highlighted the distinct investigative trajectories pursued by different branches within the federal Attorney General’s Office concerning Osorio Sánchez’s case and the Vizsla Silver workers’ ordeal.

Despite the arrests of suspects linked to the Vizsla Silver kidnapping, including individuals associated with the La Chapiza faction, questions persist regarding the discovery of the clandestine graves, the identities of buried individuals alongside Osorio Sánchez, and the division of investigative responsibilities between state and federal entities. The prevailing ambiguity surrounding these aspects has fueled concerns among legal representatives and family members seeking closure and justice.

The tragic events involving Osorio Sánchez and the Vizsla Silver workers unfolded amidst a prolonged conflict within the Sinaloa cartel, escalating into violence and upheaval that have reverberated across the region. The intricate dynamics of the cartel strife, involving rival factions and external pressures, have complicated the pursuit of justice and resolution for the affected families and communities.

In conclusion, the unresolved circumstances surrounding Osorio Sánchez’s demise underscore the challenges and complexities inherent in seeking accountability and closure in the aftermath of violent crimes. The family’s plea for transparency and comprehensive investigations resonates amid the backdrop of a protracted conflict that has claimed numerous lives and perpetuated a climate of uncertainty and insecurity in the region.
