Premier Danielle Smith clashed with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew during the Western Premiers’ Conference in Kananaskis, Alta. The disagreement stemmed from Smith’s referendum proposal on Alberta’s future in Canada, questioning the application of Section 35 of the Canadian Constitution regarding Indigenous rights.
Smith emphasized the need for clarity on the duty to consult, especially concerning citizen initiatives, while Kinew disputed her stance, asserting that the government, not petition gatherers, holds the duty to consult. This disagreement follows a recent court ruling that overturned a separation petition in Alberta due to insufficient consultation with First Nations.
Kinew supported the court ruling and commended First Nations for halting the separatist movement. He met with Alberta First Nations representatives, including chiefs from various Treaty regions, to discuss separatism, resource governance, and Indigenous rights.
During the conference, Kinew urged a delay in referendum discussions to focus on national unity and emphasized collaboration to address pipeline construction challenges. The premiers’ joint statement highlighted economic, trade, and security issues, urging Ottawa to establish a Defense, Security, and Resilience Bank in Vancouver and resolve trade disputes affecting western Canadian industries.
