Residents in Regina are encountering coyotes not just at the cinema but also in local parks. Scott Paton, a frequent visitor to Les Sherman Park, came across a coyote in mid-August while walking his dogs. The coyote, which approached within about 10 feet, appeared more curious than aggressive, possibly searching for food. Paton continued on his walk, alerting others in the park about the coyote’s presence. He mentioned that a park visitor had mentioned seeing the coyote around for several weeks, although he hasn’t spotted it lately, only finding coyote droppings in the area.
While Paton remains unperturbed by the coyote’s presence, not everyone in the Cathedral neighborhood shares his sentiment. Reports from locals via Facebook describe multiple sightings of coyotes in Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park since August. Numerous posts detail encounters where the coyote approached and followed individuals and their pets. Some posts recounted instances of the coyote chasing people and pets for prolonged periods. Witnesses noted that the coyote seemed comfortable around humans and was unresponsive to attempts to scare it away with loud noises or gestures.
City Councilor David Froh also had a close encounter with a coyote during a morning run at Les Sherman Park. Froh emphasized that while wildlife sightings are common and often don’t require immediate action, persistent sightings pose public safety risks that demand a response from city authorities. The City of Regina disclosed that it had received reports of two coyotes in the area and is collaborating with provincial conservation officers to safely remove and relocate the animals.
Froh assured residents that the removal process is conducted safely for both the community and the coyotes. Tranquilization methods are employed, as discharging firearms within the city is prohibited. Froh acknowledged that coyote sightings can be alarming but stressed the importance of coexisting with wildlife in Regina and prioritizing the safety of pets and wildlife.
Although the movie “Coyote vs. Acme,” featuring Will Forte, is currently showing in multiple Regina theaters, Froh urged residents to report real-life coyote sightings or any other wild animals posing safety risks to the City of Regina.
