The Canadian Football League is set to launch its 2027 season earlier than usual and introduce a revamped playoff structure. Starting next year, the CFL’s regular season will commence during the Victoria Day weekend in May, marking its earliest start date ever. The 2026 season will begin on June 4, with the Montreal Alouettes facing off against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Commissioner Stewart Johnston expressed excitement about the upcoming changes, stating that the CFL aims to take center stage throughout the summer, aligning with key holiday weekends from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving to offer compelling experiences for fans in stadiums and those tuning in from home.
The significant alteration lies in the CFL playoffs format, where eight out of the league’s nine teams will qualify for the post-season. This new format will feature three playoff rounds leading up to the Grey Cup game, as opposed to the previous two rounds (division semifinal and final). Johnston emphasized that the revised format will bring more games, heightened drama, and increased entertainment value, ensuring that every match holds significant consequences and keeps more teams in the running until the end.
In the restructured playoff format, the first and second-place teams in each division will compete in the initial playoff games, with the victors earning a bye to the Grey Cup semifinals and securing home-field advantage. The losing teams will progress to the second round of the playoffs, known as elimination games. Teams outside the top two in each division will be seeded from fifth to ninth, with the ninth seed failing to qualify for the post-season.
The fifth and sixth seeds will host play-in games against the seventh and eighth seeds during the same weekend as the divisional matchups. The winners of the play-in games will advance to the second round, while the losers will be eliminated. Subsequently, the losers of the divisional contests will host the victorious play-in teams, with the winners progressing to the Grey Cup semifinals and the losers exiting the competition.
The winners of the divisional games will face off against the winners of the elimination matches, with matchups determined by regular-season records. The victorious teams will move on to the Grey Cup game scheduled for November 7. Both the CFL and the CFL Players’ Association have approved these changes, with CFLPA executive director David Mackie highlighting the positive impact on player compensation and overall league growth.
In addition to the playoff modifications, the CFL will implement changes to its playing field in 2027, reducing the field size from 110 to 100 yards, shortening the end zones from 20 to 15 yards, and relocating the goalposts from the goal line to the back of the end zone to enhance scoring opportunities. The 2027 CFL draft is scheduled for April 13, with rookie camps commencing on April 21 and training camps opening three days later.
