The film draws inspiration from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” condensing stories from his youth into a narrative set during a summer in Provincetown, Mass., where Bourdain began his culinary journey.
By focusing on the young Bourdain, Johnson aimed to avoid the pressure of depicting the older, more established Bourdain that many fans remember. He highlighted the complexities of Bourdain’s childhood, relationships, and self-perception as a young man entering adulthood.
