In Delta, British Columbia, North America’s primary electrochemical lithium refining facility is situated amid typically industrial buildings housing various specialized companies. This location may seem unexpected, but it signifies Canada’s endeavor to challenge China’s dominant position in lithium refining. Saad Dara, the CEO and founder of Mangrove Lithium, humorously referred to the facility as a “clown building” during a recent tour. The facility, which includes a research and development lab, reflects years of effort and planning.
After years of dedication, the company celebrated the official opening of the facility, marking a significant milestone in their journey. Starting as a one-man operation in 2013, Dara’s vision has now evolved into a team of about 75 employees working tirelessly to bring the technology to commercial fruition. The plant is designed to produce natural-grade materials by the upcoming summer and fall seasons, signifying a step towards full commercialization.
The establishment of such facilities becomes crucial as nations strive to secure their supply chains amidst escalating trade tensions and a heightened demand for essential metals like copper, nickel, and lithium. Recognizing the critical role of lithium in battery production and renewable energy transition, the Canadian government has designated it as a crucial mineral. Despite having lithium mines in Manitoba and Quebec, Canada largely relies on China for lithium refining, with the majority of the world’s lithium being sourced and processed in South America, Australia, and China.
As countries aim to reduce their dependence on foreign refining, Mangrove’s new facility in Delta represents a significant stride towards establishing a domestic lithium supply chain. With plans for further expansion, including a facility in Eastern Canada capable of supplying 500,000 electric vehicles annually, Mangrove aims to enhance Canada’s resilience and autonomy in the lithium market. This development aligns with efforts to bolster energy security, create local job opportunities, and foster a sustainable battery supply chain within the country.
