“Alberta Premier Smith Announces Fall Referendum”

Premiers from Western Canada gathered in Alberta for their annual meeting, with Alberta separation being a key topic of discussion. The meeting, held in Kananaskis, Alberta, focused on trade, the economy, energy security, defense, and nation-building initiatives. Alberta Premier Smith recently announced plans to include a referendum question in the fall ballot, asking Albertans about the province’s future within Canada.

During the meeting, Premier Smith defended her decision, emphasizing that the referendum aims to address legitimate concerns while expressing her support for Alberta’s continued unity with Canada. She commended Prime Minister Mark Carney for addressing issues in Alberta, including potential pipeline construction and a new carbon pricing agreement, but noted that more progress is needed.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe backed Smith’s referendum decision, citing legal obligations. However, British Columbia Premier David Eby criticized the separatist conversation in Alberta, expressing concerns about the impact on national unity. Tensions between Smith and Eby escalated over a proposed pipeline project to transport oil to the B.C. coast.

Premier Smith viewed the energy agreement between Alberta and the federal government as beneficial for both Alberta and Canada. At the meeting, Premier Eby highlighted the need for his government’s involvement in ongoing discussions regarding the pipeline agreement. Additionally, Premier Smith planned to address equalization payments, a longstanding grievance of Alberta with the federal government, during the meeting.

The premiers are set to continue their discussions on Tuesday to further explore these critical issues.
