Singer Bonnie Tyler has passed away at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal, as confirmed by a statement released on her social media platforms. The renowned Grammy-nominated artist had undergone emergency intestinal surgery in early May in Faro, Portugal, where she resided, and subsequently remained in a medically induced coma for several weeks.

Her family announced the unexpected demise of Tyler on Wednesday night. The distinctive-voiced singer gained fame for the 1983 classic ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which topped the charts in Canada, the U.K., and the Billboard Hot 100. Tyler received a Grammy nomination for both the song and the album “Faster Than the Speed of Night” in 1984.

Hailing from Wales, Tyler, who was the daughter of a coal miner, achieved her first No. 1 hit in Canada in 1978 with “It’s A Heartache,” a song that also made it to the top five on the Billboard charts. Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth expressed condolences, acknowledging Tyler as an iconic figure whose music brought joy to many.

Throughout her career, Tyler continued to perform until her recent passing, with scheduled concerts being canceled following her surgery in May.
