Richmond RCMP reported that an unauthorized person accessed an aircraft at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) early Monday morning. The individual, who was apprehended and is currently in police custody, has not been identified further by the authorities. Police were dispatched to the airport around 4 a.m. PT on Monday.
According to the Vancouver Airport Authority, the person breached a secure “apron area” near the terminal by crossing over the fenceline. Aprons are crucial zones surrounding the terminal where airplanes load and unload passengers and cargo, refuel, park overnight, and undergo maintenance.
The airport’s swift response, along with cooperation from partner agencies and the on-site RCMP detachment, contained the situation within minutes. YVR confirmed that airport operations remained unaffected, and emergency protocols were followed. Authorities are collaborating with law enforcement to reassess security measures for continued safety.
Porter Airlines disclosed that one of its planes was involved in the incident. The individual accessed the wheel well of the aircraft, which has a capacity for 132 passengers. Porter Airlines assured that regular operations were maintained, and the affected aircraft will undergo a thorough inspection before returning to service.
The RCMP’s investigation into the matter is ongoing, with a focus on the security breach at YVR.
