“Bridge Controversy Shapes Michigan Senate Race”

The delayed inauguration of a bridge linking Michigan and Canada is now becoming intertwined with a significant Senate race, as Democratic contender Mallory McMorrow initiates a major campaign to leverage the situation against U.S. President Donald Trump and the Republicans. McMorrow’s latest advertisement asserts that Trump is obstructing the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, insinuating a connection to a prominent political donor. This move aligns with her anti-corruption campaign theme.

Originally planned for a grand opening on June 12, the bridge’s unveiling was unexpectedly postponed due to pending issues between the U.S. and Canada. This conflict provides Democrats a unique opportunity to link Trump directly to a project with tangible economic impacts in a crucial state. For McMorrow, aiming to gain traction in a competitive primary race against U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed, it offers a chance to set herself apart by making the bridge controversy a focal point of her campaign.

The anticipated opponent for the winner is Republican Mike Rogers, who previously lost to now-Senator Elissa Slotkin in 2024. Rogers has also incorporated the bridge situation into his political messaging, pledging to prioritize the bridge’s opening if elected to Washington.

In her advertisement, McMorrow stands before the bridge, declaring that it is ready for operation but remains closed because of Trump’s actions. She accuses Trump of stalling the bridge’s opening due to alleged ties to a billionaire family that owns a competing bridge, referencing campaign finance records showing a $1 million donation to Trump’s super PAC by Matthew Moroun, a member of the Moroun family.

The Gordie Howe Bridge project, funded by Canada and negotiated by former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, commenced in 2018 and has incurred costs close to $6.4 billion. Named after the renowned Canadian hockey player Gordie Howe, the bridge is expected to serve as a crucial economic link between Canada and the U.S.

McMorrow’s campaign, characterized by her bold approach, aims to break through in a race increasingly perceived as a contest between two candidates. She acknowledges the uphill battle she faces against Stevens, who possesses substantial resources, and El-Sayed, who has garnered support from progressive figures like Bernie Sanders.

The Gordie Howe digital ad represents the second installment in a series, with an initial investment exceeding $400,000 for TV and digital placements in the Detroit area. Various outside groups have also entered the fray, with significant financial support flowing into the race.

As the primary race intensifies, McMorrow remains optimistic about the upcoming weeks, emphasizing the unpredictability of the political landscape and the potential for shifting voter perspectives.
