A man from Georgetown, Ont., named Ethan Lehouillier has been handed an eight-year prison term for causing a fatal accident due to impaired driving. The incident occurred nearly a year ago in Toronto when he crashed into a van carrying a local family, resulting in the tragic deaths of three children. Justice Kimberley Crosbie delivered the sentence in a Toronto courtroom, also imposing a 20-year driving ban, with 12 years of prohibition following the completion of his jail time. The decision on his future driving privileges rests with Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation.
Aside from the fatalities, two adults and another child sustained injuries in the Etobicoke collision. Giving credit for time served and acknowledging the harsh conditions in jail, the judge mentioned that Lehouillier has around six years and five months remaining on his sentence. Crosbie condemned impaired driving as a significant issue in society, emphasizing its preventable nature and the profound impact it can have on individuals and families.
Reflecting on the harm caused by the defendant, the judge took into account Lehouillier’s remorse and early guilty plea, his young age, mental health challenges, and the broader context of similar drunk driving cases. She acknowledged the lifelong suffering endured by the victims’ relatives and friends, highlighting the enduring consequences of the crime for the affected family and the lasting guilt that Lehouillier will carry.
Lehouillier, 20, visibly emotional in court, had pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to impaired driving causing death and bodily harm. The fatal crash took place in Etobicoke near a Highway 401 exit, where Lehouillier, then 19 years old, lost control of his speeding vehicle, colliding with a minivan at a traffic light. The collision claimed the lives of siblings Ramone, Jace, and Mya Laviña, with the mother and a family friend also in the van surviving the tragic incident.
Expressing disappointment with the sentence, Jade Galve, the grieving mother of the deceased children, criticized the leniency of the judgment, emphasizing the severe impact of impaired driving and advocating for stricter penalties to deter such behavior. Galve stressed the irrevocable loss suffered by her family and urged for societal changes to prevent similar tragedies in the future, emphasizing the importance of responsible decision-making and protection of children.
In response to Galve’s sentiments, the family’s lawyer, Michael Coristine, acknowledged the emotional complexity of the case and the difficulty in finding a satisfactory sentence.
