A group of four confident Canadian athletes showcased their skills at the World Triathlon Cup in Chengdu, China, earning a bronze medal in a competitive mixed relay event. Led by Tyler Mislawchuk’s experience, the team, consisting of Isla Britton from Montreal, Martin Sobey from Charlottetown, Sophia Howell from Airdrie, Alta., and Mislawchuk from Oak Bluff, Man., completed the race in one hour, 22 minutes, and 53 seconds.
Britton, a 22-year-old national development team member, kickstarted the race for the Canadians, setting an early pace in the swim, bike, and run segments. Despite starting in the eleventh position after the swim, Britton fought her way up during the bike and run portions before passing the baton to Mislawchuk.
Mislawchuk, fresh off an individual bronze medal, maintained Canada’s position at the front of the pack during his leg of the race. His exceptional running abilities propelled the team towards the podium, with Howell and Sobey also contributing significantly to the team’s success.
Howell, aged 24, held onto a podium position for Canada, with the top three nations creating a gap from the rest of the field. In the final leg, Sobey battled fiercely with teams from the United States and France for the last spot on the podium, ultimately securing the bronze medal for Canada in a thrilling finish.
The team’s collective effort and strong performance culminated in a well-deserved bronze medal, with Spain clinching gold and Great Britain finishing just behind in second place. The Canadian athletes expressed pride in their accomplishment and highlighted the team’s unity and determination throughout the race.
