“Michael” Biopic Smashes Box Office Records

Despite facing mixed reviews, tough competition, and last-minute challenges, the Jackson family movie “Michael” has achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the top-grossing biopic in history. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film has raked in an impressive $977 million at the global box office, surpassing the previous record-holder “Oppenheimer” from 2025. “Michael” had already claimed the title of highest-grossing musical biopic, surpassing the earnings of “Bohemian Rhapsody” by mid-June. Notably, it now stands as Lionsgate Films’ most successful movie, outshining the 2013 hit “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

The storyline of “Michael” chronicles the life of pop icon Michael Jackson, portrayed in his adult years by his real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson. The narrative traces Jackson’s journey from his early performances with the Jackson 5 to the pinnacle of his career, marked by iconic hits like “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and “Thriller.”

However, the film notably avoids delving into the allegations of child sexual abuse that plagued Michael Jackson, who passed away in 2009. Initial plans for the script included a scene depicting Jackson being searched by police during the 1993 Neverland ranch raid, but this content was ultimately scrapped due to legal complications stemming from an out-of-court settlement between the Jackson estate and accuser Jordan Chandler.

The theatrical version of “Michael” concludes in 1988, before any public accusations were made against Jackson. The extensive reshoots, estimated to cost up to $50 million, were funded by the estate. Despite the controversies surrounding Jackson, the film’s portrayal of the star’s life has sparked diverse reactions, with some critics criticizing its pacing and storytelling while others praise Jaafar Jackson’s performance.

The film’s success at the box office has defied initial projections, with opening weekend earnings far exceeding expectations. Buoyed by strong audience reception and increased streaming numbers for Michael Jackson’s music post-release, the movie continues to dominate the cinematic landscape. Both Fuqua and Lionsgate have hinted at a potential sequel focusing on Jackson’s later years.
