Prime Minister Mark Carney has reviewed a preliminary agreement between the U.S. and Iran aimed at resolving conflicts in the Middle East, describing it as a significant development. Speaking to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins during the G7 summit in France, Carney expressed satisfaction with the deal but did not disclose the specific origins of the document he examined, citing “sources.” Notably, the agreement has not been publicly disclosed, and Carney did not address concerns about the exclusion of Israel and Hezbollah from the negotiations.
At the G7 summit, both Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump prioritized discussions on Iran. While details of the agreement remain undisclosed, reports indicate that negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program are set to unfold over a 60-day period post-signing. Carney emphasized that the agreement lays the foundation for preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, signaling a crucial step forward.
Regarding the fate of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile and its implications for Israel’s military presence in Lebanon, conflicting viewpoints have emerged among officials. Carney hinted at the agreement offering a platform for addressing Lebanon’s situation but refrained from divulging specifics. Additionally, the deal reportedly includes provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global oil supply that was disrupted during the recent conflict.
Carney suggested that Canada could contribute to the agreement’s implementation, potentially aiding in the removal of mines from the strait and assisting in various aspects post-signing. Addressing the importance of diversifying global economic choke points, Carney highlighted Canada’s potential role in areas such as oil, gas, and critical minerals.
As discussions shifted to Ukraine during the G7 meetings, Carney announced new sanctions on Russia targeting key assets of the Russian military apparatus. Describing the talks on Ukraine as “constructive,” Carney asserted that Russia is at a disadvantage in the ongoing conflict and predicted eventual defeat for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
