Barrett’s Buzzer-Beater Leads Raptors to Game 7

RJ Barrett’s timely game-winning basket with just 1.2 seconds remaining in overtime on Friday evoked memories of past NBA playoff heroics for Toronto basketball enthusiasts. His crucial three-point shot from the top of the key ricocheted off the back rim, soared high above the backboard, and swished through the net, securing a 112-110 victory for the Raptors and necessitating a decisive Game 7 in the first-round series at Rocket Arena in Ohio scheduled for tonight.

Many fans were reminded of Kawhi Leonard’s dramatic buzzer-beater in Game 7 of the 2019 Eastern Conference semifinals against Philadelphia when Barrett sank his shot. The Raptors eventually clinched the NBA championship that season.

Barrett and his teammates acknowledged the exhilaration of Friday’s win but swiftly shifted focus to the upcoming make-or-break showdown in Cleveland. Barrett expressed confidence in their ability to handle the challenge, stating, “We have one game to determine it all. We have overcome significant obstacles throughout the year, and we are prepared for the tough task ahead in Cleveland.”

Despite the excitement of Game 6, it was easy to overlook the fact that the Raptors were outscored 23-12 in the final quarter, coming close to elimination. The physical Raptors aim to replicate Dallas’ feat in the 2022 Western Conference semifinals by winning a Game 7 on the road, following the trend where the first six games were all won by the home team.

The seasoned Cleveland Cavaliers, battle-hardened and primed for playoff success, are eyeing a third consecutive first-round advancement. With an impressive 6-2 record in Game 7s, including a perfect 4-0 at home, the Cavaliers present a formidable challenge. In contrast, Toronto holds a 3-3 Game 7 record and faces its first road Game 7 since the 2021 conference semifinals, where they suffered an 88-87 defeat to Philadelphia.

Both teams have been evenly matched offensively, averaging 111.5 points per game. The Raptors have a slight edge in shooting percentage at 40.7% compared to the Cavaliers’ 39.8%, while Toronto’s defense has demonstrated a slightly superior rating.

Toronto forward Brandon Ingram’s availability for tonight remains uncertain as he missed Friday’s game due to right heel inflammation.
