Blind Llama Finds Friendship in Vocal Sheep

Laura Greaves took to social media in search of a gentle ewe in Saskatchewan to keep her blind llama company, rather than for breeding purposes. A sheep named Peeps from Eyebrow, Sask., was suggested due to her vocal nature, making her a suitable companion for the llama.

Maple, the llama, was acquired by Greaves as a guardian animal to protect her livestock from coyotes. The decision to bring Maple home was influenced by Jacquie Poole, a friend of Greaves, who saw online a listing for a blind llama in need of a new home.

The journey to retrieve Maple involved a nearly 17-hour drive to Alberta. Upon arrival, they discovered a frail llama with dental issues, prompting Greaves to provide the care needed. Maple underwent eye surgery due to a severe condition, resulting in the removal of both eyes to alleviate pain and discomfort.

Adjusting to blindness was challenging for Maple, as llamas have limited senses of smell and rely heavily on vision. Greaves utilized sound cues to assist Maple in navigating her surroundings, although she faced difficulties locating food and water in her new environment.

To help alleviate Maple’s loneliness and improve her quality of life, Greaves sought a suitable companion. Peeps, the sheep, was introduced, offering Maple the emotional support she needed. The duo’s bond is growing, with Peeps guiding Maple through sound cues and providing comfort during stressful situations.

The long-term plan is to integrate Peeps and Maple with other animals on the farm. For now, they remain a supportive duo, helping each other navigate their shared space and fostering a unique friendship.
