Auto Racing and Paralympic Champion Alex Zanardi Passes Away

Italian auto racing champion and Paralympic gold medalist Alex Zanardi has passed away at the age of 59. His family confirmed his death, stating that he peacefully passed away on Friday night. The cause of death was not disclosed.

In 2020, Zanardi was involved in a serious handbike accident in Tuscany, resulting in significant facial and cranial injuries. Nearly two decades earlier, he lost both of his legs in an auto racing crash. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid tribute to Zanardi, describing him as a courageous and dignified individual who inspired many.

Zanardi achieved success in CART, winning championships in 1997 and 1998 before briefly returning to Formula One. Despite a life-changing accident in 2001 that cost him both legs, Zanardi never gave up. He designed his own prosthetics, excelled in hand cycling, and won multiple medals at the Paralympics.

Renowned for his determination and spirit, Zanardi’s legacy extended beyond sports. His positive attitude and resilience earned him admiration worldwide. F1 president Stefano Domenicali expressed deep sadness over Zanardi’s passing, highlighting his inspirational journey.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) praised Zanardi for his remarkable career and transformation into a Paralympic champion. Pope Francis also commended Zanardi for his strength in the face of adversity following his 2020 accident.

Zanardi’s family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and requested privacy during this mourning period. Funeral arrangements are pending. The Italian Olympic Committee called for a minute of silence at sports events in Italy to honor Zanardi, who is survived by his wife and son.
