“Erin Brockovich Launches Website to Monitor AI Data Centers”

Erin Brockovich, a well-known advocate for consumers and the environment, has launched a new website aimed at monitoring the expansion of AI data centers in the United States. This initiative invites residents to share their concerns and experiences regarding these facilities.

Brockovich gained fame for her involvement in a case against the Pacific Gas & Electric Company related to groundwater contamination in Hinkley, California, which was later depicted in the Oscar-winning film “Erin Brockovich” starring Julia Roberts. This legal battle resulted in one of the largest class-action settlements in American history.

The website, called Brockovich AI Data Center Reporting, features a map highlighting operational and upcoming major AI data centers across the country. It also offers links to news articles covering various projects nationwide and showcases communities opposing the establishment of these centers.

Visitors to the site can fill out a form to provide details about the impacts they have witnessed in their neighborhoods where data centers are present, being constructed, or proposed. In a post on Substack discussing the project, Brockovich expressed that while she does not oppose AI data centers entirely, communities nationwide have raised valid concerns about their environmental effects and the lack of communication from developers.

Since its launch on April 27, the website has received over 3,800 reports from individuals expressing worries about the proliferation of data centers. These reports highlight issues such as escalating utility costs, unexplained illnesses in animals, and concerns about the long-term consequences on health and property values. Brockovich emphasizes that these complaints depict a broader national trend when viewed collectively.

Amid a growing resistance to AI data centers in North America, particularly in the United States, Brockovich’s project signifies a pushback against the unchecked expansion of these facilities. Recent instances, such as the proposed data center in Box Elder County, Utah, supported by Canadian investor Kevin O’Leary, have faced significant opposition from local residents, with some demanding community input through voting processes.

Similar resistance has been witnessed in Canada, where protests against planned AI data centers have occurred in Vancouver and Olds, Alberta. Concerned citizens have raised objections based on potential health risks, noise pollution, and emissions associated with these projects.
