“Calgary Father Accused of Murdering Two Young Children”

A man in Calgary has been accused of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his two children, who were discovered in a vehicle in the city’s northwest region on Thursday. The victims, a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, were identified by the Calgary Police Service on Friday.

The 37-year-old suspect appeared before a Calgary justice of the peace on Friday morning. The Crown requested a publication ban on the children’s and the accused’s identities, preventing CBC News from disclosing the names.

Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn of the homicide unit described the incident as a tragic and incomprehensible loss during a press conference on Friday. He emphasized the significant impact such events have on families, communities, as well as the responding officers and first responders.

According to Rahn, the accused contacted 911 around 10 a.m., informing authorities that he had harmed his children and providing his location. Upon arrival at the scene on the 4500 block of 14th Street N.W., the police found a stationary vehicle. The suspect was apprehended, and the deceased children were subsequently discovered inside the vehicle.

Investigations revealed that the suspect and the children’s mother had a six-year common-law relationship and shared custody of the children following their separation last year. Despite previous police visits to their shared residence, no charges had been filed.

On the day before the tragic discovery, the suspect picked up the children around 5 p.m., but they failed to return as expected. Concerned, the mother contacted the police when attempts to reach the suspect were unsuccessful. Official records suggest the offense occurred Wednesday evening, though the exact timing is yet to be confirmed.

Autopsies on the victims are ongoing, with the suspect scheduled for a court appearance on Monday.

In response to the heartbreaking incident, members of Calgary’s Eritrean community congregated at a local church to mourn the children and provide support to their mother. Father Goitom Mengesha expressed the community’s shock and devastation, highlighting the importance of unity during challenging times. Adanech Sahilie from the Immigrant Outreach Society voiced concerns over the mother’s well-being, noting the absence of her family in Canada and the profound impact of the tragic loss on her.
